Hey William, love to hear your thoughts on something. What about becoming a software engineer en route to becoming a Data Scientist? I've been in the analytics space for some time now, and I find it difficult to break into the ML space without SWE experience. It could just be the opportunities I've been chasing, but can't help feeling like a SWE has a better shot at ML jobs than someone doing more traditional analytics (data modeling, SQL, dashboards, etc.)
